Asbestos testing service
ALS has been UKAS accredited for the identification
of asbestos in material samples since 1987. All of the asbestos
identification preformed by ALS is carried out by our team of experts
all of whom are qualified to BOHS P401: Identification of asbestos
in bulk samples.
Our team of analysts are employed full time
to analyse the samples using polarised light microscopy as defined
in HSE document HSG248 “Asbestos:
The Analyst’s guide for sampling, analysis and clearance
procedures”.
Our recently refurbished laboratory enables us to provide our clients
with a rapid turnaround of results whilst ensuring that their accuracy
is not compromised.
Potential Asbestos fibres are identified using the
following method:
an initial visual examination is carried out of
the sample to tease out any potential fibres and to assess the
current treatment required.
sample treatment takes place if required, to isolate
any fibres.
a more detailed search using a stereo microscope
takes place to classify the fibre types.
any fibres found are mounted onto microscope slides
and immersed in a Refractive Index Liquid (RI), this is to simulate
as close as possible the original specification of the fibre
Polarised Light Microscopy is now used to positively
identify any asbestos materials within the sample.
The following properties are used to identify the
types of asbestos fibres present:
- Colour
- Pleochroism
- Morphology
- Birefringence
- Angle of Extinction
- Sign of Elongation
- Dispersion Staining

ALS Asbestos Register Management System (ARMS) - making life
easier!
The
ALS database is a user-friendly, cost effective and, ultimately,
updatable system to manage your Asbestos Risk Assessments. It
is fully compliant with MDHS 100 and is compatible with Personal
Digital Assistants (PDA).
ARMS is ideal for all companies – large
or small - making information readily accessible to all interested
parties.
